St. Bartholomew, as depicted above at St. John Lateran in Rome, is the patron saint of tanners. Tanners, in case you were wondering, basically skin an animal and turn the hide into leather. It is said that St. Bartholomew was flayed to death (his skin was peeled off), and thus he's holding his skin and a knife. Believe me, the above depiction is not the most grotesque you can find! This is more the G-rated version.
St. Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles, and possibly synonymous with Nathaniel (as mentioned in the Gospel of John), was a missionary to India, Ethiopia, Mesopotamia, Parthia, and Lycaonia. Read more about St. Bartholomew on Catholic Encyclopedia.
