St. Vincent de Paul was a champion of what we might call today the marginalized. He came into good fortune with some of the wealthy, who then used their fortunes to help the poor at his persuasion. He treated convicts and others with the human dignity that no one else would give them. His name lives on in the order of Vincentian priests and in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, both geared toward giving dignity to the poor and the marginalized.
Among his more notable beginnings: while in his late 20s, St. Vincent de Paul was captured by Turkish pirates and made into a slave. After he converted his master, together they made an arrrrrrduous escape.
