St. Teresa of Avila, (St. Teresa of Jesus), reformed the Carmelite order in the sixteenth century. She is also was a mystic, and her book "The Interior Castle" is a spiritual classic. St. Teresa did extensive work with St. John of the Cross reforming the Carmelites. She is also a Doctor of the Church, the first woman to be named such.
