Your [atheist] Argument is Invalid

His hair is not a bird; it doesn't NEED to be a bird. Jesus is risen!

What I Remember From Logic Class...

In formal logic, a "valid" argument is simply an argument without logic mistakes internally. Here's a valid argument:

1. Kneeling always causes pain.
2. The angels depicted above are kneeling.
therefore,
3. The angels depicted above are in pain.

This argument is logically valid, since the conclusion follows logically from the premises, but the argument is "unsound" since it contains a false premise (that kneeling always hurts) which leads to a false conclusion (that angels feel physical pain.)

An argument which were both invalid and unsound would contain one or more false premises and apply its premises illogically.

An argument from an atheist might go like this:

1. Christians claim Jesus rose from the dead.
2. Rising from the dead is impossible.
3. Nothing impossible can be true.
therefore,
3. What Christians claim about Jesus rising is not true.

The atheist's argument is valid but unsound since premise #2 is false, as angels and saints attest. All of this is to say that in "formal logic" the caption above ought to read, "Your argument is unsound".

It's definitely a beautiful, funny, and 5-star piece of work though--I just felt in the mood to teach about something.

Ah - very nice explanation! Unsound just doesn't have the proper tone, when compared to 'invalid' :-)

"Your argument is invalid" is also a phrase I got from a meme
typically involving some inexplicable (often photoshopped) image.
