Can haz more bling? Pope Gregory the Great - Papal Tiara

Iced up enough?

Pope Saint Gregory the Great held the Papal office from 590 to 604. One of four Pope's to be titled "the Great" (the latest which was Pope John Paul II.) Saint Gregory was the first Pope to have been originally been a monk.

Reluctant to be elevated to the Chair of Saint Peter, Saint Gregory had to be escorted to Saint Peter's Basillica after the Emporer confirmed his election. Saint Gregory is renowned for reforming the Latin Liturgy. Gregorian Chant is named for him.

Gregory the Great declared the role of bishop as a "physician of the soul." He referred to himself and made famous the term "Servus Servorum Dei" which means "the Servant of the Servants of God" as a reminder of nature of the office of the Papacy. Popes since then have used the term and remains an official title of the Pontiff to this day. In the modern era, Pope's have taken upon this formula more to heart.

The last Pope to wear the Tiara was Pope Paul VI in 1963 after the Second Vatican Council in recognition of the spiritual role the Pope would play over the temporal role. Although the Papal Tiara was not in use back in Saint Gregory's day, he is often depicted wearing one, with full Papal regalia and holding a Bible.

Pope Saint Gregory the Great is recognized as a Saint in Eastern Orthodox tradition as well as the Church of England.
