Pope Liberius commissioned the construction of the Liberian Basilica, later S. Maria Maggiore, after Mary manifested herself and her desire to have a church built in her honor in identical dreams shared by a local patrician, his wife, and the Pope. The outline of the church was physically laid out on the ground of the noble's property by Liberius himself in a miraculous snowfall on August 5th, 352.
The miracle is commemorated in the basilica each year on August 5th by dropping white rose petals from the dome during Mass.
