Here is yet another beautiful depiction of Mary's fiat. Why have so many artists attempted to capture this moment on canvas? Because it was such an important moment—Mary's yes, her free cooperation with God's grace, led to Christ's incarnation.
As to the lilies, they are often used in religious art to symbolize purity. Mary certainly was deserving, but perhaps she seems to be refusing them from the angel in this depiction due to her profound humility, recognizing her unworthiness for such an honor.
May we always strive to imitate Mary's virtues, especially her purity and humility!
